With such an abundance of freshly sourced produce in this area you can be certain there are plenty of opportunities to sample some superb food. Fish, shellfish, game and locally grown salads and vegetables means the many places to eat in the heart of Sutherland are really worth a try.

For those guests who arrive by bicycle or on foot, please note that the closest evening eating establishments are approximately 6 miles away. If you wish to arrive with your own meals that simply need heating, we are happy to do this in our kitchen oven for you and lay a place at the dining table. Regretfully we can only offer this service to cyclists or walkers.

The Achness Hotel in Rosehall is a real haunt for fishermen who visit this region. There are two choices here, one a restaurant (access on the right hand driveway to the side of the hotel) serving lunch and dinner or the bar (access to the left hand side driveway) where you can get a good selection of bar meals to suit every palate and purse. The Achness has an extensive range of single malts and usually has two ales available on the hand pumps. Main courses start at around £8.95.

Opens 7 days a week for lunch and dinner/bar meals. Last orders in the bar 8.30pm. Booking advisable.

'Mac and Wild' at Falls of Shin

The new Falls of Shin Visitor Attraction re-opened in 2017 with a new cafe/restaurant, adventure playground and crazy golf. 'Mac and Wild  took over the restaurant in June 2018 and have brought their flair for great Scottish food where its provenance is  so important. The outdoor pavilion serves takeaway teas and coffee's and local ice cream. Inside the main building a varied menu with breakfast specials, lunchtime treats such as their open sandwiches, fish and chips or the award winning veni-moo burgers not to mention the mouthwatering steaks. Vegetarians have the opportunity to try the wonderful "Bloody Roots" burger and a daily salad choice is available.  Late evenings on Friday and Saturday. During off peak season opening hours may vary, so check before travelling.  After eating why not take a walk along the range of woodland walks starting from the car park which will take anything from 20 minutes to an hour. Of course don’t forget that between around April to October you may be lucky enough to see salmon jumping the falls as they migrate.

The Crannag is owned and run by Ian and Kathy Smith, who fill the roles of front of house and chef respectively. Here you will find locally sourced produce showcased at its best in a wonderfully varied and seasonal menu. A very popular choice with locals and visitors and open all the year round. The Crannag Bistro has been serving customers since 2006 and won awards such as the Highlands and Islands Restaurant of the Year.

Booking recommended. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm, with last orders at 8.30pm or by arrangement. A popular takeaway service is also available from 5pm to 7.30pm.

The Pier Café, Lairg

Here you will find a seasonally changing menu supplied with produce from the best local suppliers. Serving locals and visitors alike all the year round, so do book well in advance. For 3 courses here expect to pay about £20-£30 per head without wine. There is also a small craft shop, where you can pick up some interesting items from local producers.

Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, Sundays 10am to 6pm and opens for evening meals 5.30pm to 9pm only on Friday and Saturday evenings. Booking essential.

The recently refurbished Eagle is close to Dornoch Cathedral (pictured) and comprises a ground floor area combining a bar/ restaurant with original stone walls and offers authentic home cooked food and award winning real ales. The bar offers an extensive range of Scottish Single Malts and Scottish gins. Dornoch beach is an easy walk away and great for working up an appetite before eating at the Eagle.

Food is served daily from 12 noon until 9pm, while the bar is open till late.

The owners are passionate about food and locally sourced food is their speciality. With fishing boats landing on the slipway outside the hotel, it’s more about ‘food metres’ than ‘food miles’.
